A tribute to the messiah of backward classes
Ex. M.P. (Rajya Sabha)
It give me immense pleasure to present this volume of Photo Memorabilia on the life and times of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash, the great visionary leader of the backward classes of India on the occasion Of Foundation Day of the National Union of Backward Classes(NUBC).As you all Know the NUBC, the national level organization was founded by Chaudhary Brahm Prakash in 1979 with the sole aim of giving a voice and platform to the multitude of marginalized poor and the landless backward left out of the
mainstream of economic development – unlike their slightly lucky brethren belonging to the SCs and STs included in the national census and the reservation loop from the very beginning of an independent and state of India.
Chaudhary Brahm Prakash was the first political personality at the national level to have though of the need for giving the million of other Backward Classes citizens constituting over 60 per cent of India’s population a constitutional right of participation in the national development by way of providing reservation in job in the government and public sector organization . The sitting up of Mandal Commission in the late seventies to look into the case of such reservation for OBCs and making appropriate recommendation to the government was a direct outcome of initiative taken by Chaudhary Brahm Prakash supported by other backward leaders.
After submission of the Mandal commission report which recommended over 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, the two subsequent government at the Centre developed cold feet on the very idea of such a step prompted apparently by fear of an upper cast backlash. The NUBC under the stewardship of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash took upon itself the task of organizing the backward classes to lunch nation –wide agitation and protest rallies and marches to awaken the government to the reality of a backward classes uprising. At long last the cherished dream of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became a reality during 1989-1990 when V.P. Singh led government at the Centre formally accepted to implement the recommendation of Mandal Commission Report on OBC reservation into to. Chaudhary Brahm Prakash was truly a messiah of the classes of India.
For V politics was secondary, a mean to achieve the primary goal of upliftment and empowerment of the downtrodden, not just the welfare of the backward classes but all the other oppressed classes. He amply demonstrated this fact when he accepted the suggestion to re-christen NUBC as the National Union of Backward Classes, SCs, STs and Minorities, which the official name of the organization today. He was self less to the utmost and was immensely humane always accessible to all and willing to help the needy regardless of cast, creed or status.
He was a strong leader but he was a principled pursuit of politics, and he never compromised on his deeply held beliefs and values. This actually brought him in situations of confrontation with tallest leaders in his party the congress an several occasions, but he never budged from his stances and upheld his principles. Chaudhary Brahm Prakash was a stalwart among congress leader in Delhi and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru handpicked him to assume the first chief ministership of Delhi in 1952. He did much for the development of modern city of Delhi and it was he who first visualized the expansion of Delhi into the National Capital Territory Region(NCR) laying the foundation of metropolitan city of capital of India.
Today we pay our respectful homage to the memory of our great leader Chaudhary Brahm Prakash by releasing this book of Photo Memorabilia on his life and times that would remind and acquaint us with the multiple facets of his personality and magnitude of work he did in his lifetime for the cause of humanity at large and for the backward classes I particular.
I am confident photo memorabilia on the life and works of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash will help propagate his message of equal opportunity and right to employment and education to every citizen of the country, but specially including the poorest, the most backward and the most neglected or oppressed, which has remained a pipedream even to this day.
